Not the Killing Type A Booktown Mystery Lorna Barrett 9780425262115 Books

This is the seventh release in Lorna Barrett's series and it is as fresh and engaging as the launch book. I loved the opening scene at the Brookview Inn; the characters are so well-drawn and familiar to me, I felt like I was sitting right next to them as they discussed the upcoming elections. Bob Kelly, Angelica's former beau, is sure he'll be elected again as president of the Stoneham Chamber of Commerce. He's astounded when Tricia Miles nominates Angelica, who happens to be her sister. Another surprise hits when Stan Berry nominates himself for president and outlines the changes he plans to make. Stoneham is considered one of the prettiest villages in New England but Berry wants to slash the budget in ways that may hurt the town's appeal as a major tourist attraction. Feelings run high as Angelica gives a convincing speech about what she would do if elected. The battle lines are drawn and everyone takes a ten minute recess. Tricia heads for the bathroom and discovers Stan Berry lying on the floor, stabbed to death with a brass letter opener that belongs to Eleanor McCorvey, the Inn's receptionist. Stoneham Police Chief Grant Baker, Tricia's sometime boyfriend, arrives on the scene and Tricia is immediately caught up in the investigation. You'll find your favorite characters, the colorful Pixie Poe, Tricia's assistant, the gentlemanly Mr. Everett, Tricia's part-time employee at the Haven't Got a Clue bookstore and of course, Miss Marple, Tricia's beloved cat. And as always, you'll find a cleverly plotted mystery with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing, all the way!

Not the Killing Type A Booktown Mystery Lorna Barrett 9780425262115 Books Reviews

The latest book in the Booktown Mysteries has hit the shelves and I couldn't wait to pick it up and discover what the folks in my favorite book-themed town, Stoneham, New Hampshire, are up to.

The end of Murder on the Half Shelf left readers with a little bit of a cliffhanger, with the appearance of her ex-husband in Stoneham, and I was interested to see what would happen with Tricia, her current boyfriend, Police Chief Grant Baker, and ex-husband, Christopher. Of course as with every book in this series I was also excited to discover what murder mystery Lorna Barrett would lay at our fingertips for us to solve!

In Not the Killing Type, life in Stoneham is pretty busy with Tricia and the other storeowners getting ready for the holiday season. Angelica is looking to contest Bob Kelly and go head-to-head with him for Commerce of Chamber president. However both Angelica and Bob are shocked when fellow-resident, Stan Berry, decides to throw his hat in for president as well. Before votes can be cast, Stan is found dead in the bathroom in the Brookview Inn and it looks like there is not just a vote still to be had, but a mystery to solve as well!!

Of all the cozy mystery series out there, this one is beyond a doubt one of my favorites. I always compare picking up the next book to going home for the holidays. I've gotten to know Tricia and her sister, Angelica, quite well. Not to mention some of my other favorites like Ginny, who manages The Happy Domestic, and Mr Everett, who works part-time for Tricia at Haven't Got a Clue bookstore. They are smart, likeable characters and ones that I love spending time with.

I liked the murder mystery in Not the Killing Type. Even though Stan Berry didn't seem all that likeable, there really wasn't a long list of suspects. As a reader trying to solve it before Tricia, I was absolutely stumped! To say I didn't see the end coming is the understatement of the year!!

For Tricia, there is a lot of emotional distress going on in her life, with Christopher returning and her relationship with Grant not doing too great. I really like how Angelica helped her through some of this upheaval. I wasn't a fan of Angelica to begin with, but Tricia's sister has grown on me and she's matured a lot. I feel like Tricia grew a lot in this book too, and I'm looking forward to seeing what direction Lorna Barrett takes her next.

I can't recommend Not the Killing Type enough. It builds on a already strong, wonderful series and I think it will appeal to all mystery fans. If you haven't started the series yet I highly recommend starting with Murder is Binding.
It is November and merchants in Stoneham, New Hampshire have their hands filled with getting ready for not only Black Friday but the election of the President of the Chamber of commerce. Tricia Miles is also busy getting ready for her friend Ginny's wedding and reluctantly gets pulled into her sister. Angelica's plan to run for president. The residents of Stoneham are not thrilled with Tricia's penchant for solving mysteries so are understandably upset when Tricia comes across the body of Stan Berry, another candidate for President. Tricia agrees to help Angelica solve the murder, but she doesn't realize how much this will hurt her relationship with several people in Stoneham.

"Not the Killing Type" is the well done seventh book in Lorna Barrett's Booktown cozy mystery series. Tricia and Angelica have continued to grow on me as characters and with this book in particular I empathized with Tricia. She is a character female readers especially can understand -at a crossroads in her life regarding her on/off again relationship with Stoneham Police Chief Grant Baker as well as her relationship with her ex-husband Christopher, and worried that her life might be a bit boring. She is also struggling with her relationship with some people in Stoneham who are beginning to think she is a jinx because she keeps finding dead bodies (props to Barrett from making that a part of the plot). Ultimately, Tricia is a very believable somewhat flawed character. I'm glad to see Angelica growing a bit in the series - she once seemed selfish to me but there are some well-done scenes with her and Tricia in this book. Pixie Hoe is another character who is growing on me and she injects some much needed humor into this book. While the book isn't a tearjerker, there are some truly sad moments that did bring tears to my eyes. The mystery is well plotted with plenty of twists and turns and I was truly sad when I found out who the killer was.

"Not the Killing Type" is another winner from Lorna Barrett.
