I wanted to love this book, as it had all of my favorite elements in fiction: horses, hot foreign guys, romance, and the polo setting was a nice bonus! The book was pretty well written for the young adult genre, heroine was a little whiny, but she had legitimate problems. Dialogue was a little cheesy at first, most noticeable between the the heroine and her family, and it was a total love at first sight typical of YA romance, but I can get past that.

What I found to be the biggest problem, and I admit that this might not be a problem at all for most young adult readers, is the horse interactions. Honestly, the horse Argus (I kept reading Angus haha) behaved like a beaten dog, and not at all how an abused horse would act. No horse insecure in his surroundings would ever curl up and lay down; it is against their very nature (horses only lay down when they are totally comfortable and can trust that everything around them is not a threat) much less for days at a time, it would kill them. Also, every time he had a problem, he'd fall down and "whine" and "whimper." Not horse sounds. They kept waiting for him to faint from not eating, which I thought was a funny joke at first, since I know some narcoleptic type horses- but no, the people in the book were ready for him to swoon at any moment. Last, the author has apparently never never handled a horse whip, since anything and everything hit by one in this novel seemed ready to bleed to death. Really, the worst that can happen is a small welt, unless this barn had some old slave driver's whip hanging around, haha.

The abused horse saves the day protecting his master trope was a little hard to take too (and over done- second book I've read this week that had this happen!), since this horse was barely letting the chick touch him. Plus, I think a horse on it's last chance with animal control attacking and nearly killing someone isn't really going to put him in good graces with said animal control. . .

So, overall, very readable, and it obviously stuck with me enough to write a review, I just wish the author had had a horsey beta reader or editor clean up some of the scenes and horse actions, since it was very distracting and somewhat eye-roll inducing to anyone familiar with horses.

Wow, I loved this book. The writing is amazing and the characters are well developed. Eric is a psychopath. Seriously, he is a little nuts. He is a #1 ranked polo player and Hannah's boyfriend. She does not know he is a psychopath, tho she thinks he is jealous and protective and a little bossy. Hannah is very likeable, pretty independent, well she's trying to be. She has a lot going on in her life. Going to College, running her Grandmothers ranch, trying to learn how to run her father's farm and dating Eric, who is very demanding. He doesn't like the ranch and doesn't want her to go to College. He wants her to be dependent on him and gets angry when she doesn't listen to him. She meets Leo, another polo player from Brazil and they have an instant connection. Eric is getting desperate, he notices the connection and is being challenged in his #1 position in polo by Leo. Weird things are happening around her, and she doesn't understand what is going on. I really loved reading this book. There is some violence and domestic abuse and cruelty to animals. But it was mesmerizing, and I had a hard time putting to down. I can't wait to read the next book.
I'm not familiar with horses, but it makes sense that the author got a lot of the behavior and lingo wrong due to unfamiliarity with horses as other reviewers have noted. It is my guess that the author does not speak English as her first language because of the weird sentences, the frequent incorrect tenses used and odd word choices. It is very brave of her to write in a second language, but it means that professional editing and proofreading is that much more important. I counted more than 80 typos or editing errors. That many typos etc. become a huge distraction in a pretty unique story line. *SPOILERS AHEAD * I found several scenarios so unbelievable to make me laugh- especially the damage done by a few lashes of a whip. I also found the boyfreind's change from a loving man to a psychopath to be unrealistic. Plus after you know all he has done it makes no sense that he'd refrain from sexual abuse/rape/torture. If this author had resisted making the bad guy so bad, and just made him overly controlling it would have made a better book. If I was certain that she spoke English first I wouldn't have been as generous with my stars.
I read some of the comments so I am not repeating what "Lys" said as he stated the problems with lack of horsemanship in the writing quite extensively. The main characters are single faceted. ( except for Eric which we learn later) Very beautiful and very wealthy. Words the author uses for adverbs and sometimes a verb, such as a phone "shimmering" are totally wrong. Hyperbole at it's worst. When reading about how she feels about Leo.. I just want to move on. Talk about overkill. Oh and I have another one for you Lys...you don't "pull" a horse. You "lead" him. Oh and then there was this comment that really made me laugh. "While I checked their shoes and replaced them when necessary". Has this woman EVER seen a horse shod??? Oh so obviously not. OK. I am sorry that there are a lot of us reading this book that actually know something about horses and I have to agree with one critic who mentioned that if she were going to write about horses, she should at the very least do some research or get someone to correct her who knows about horses and horsemanship .
